Android Wear will get the 2.0 update on Oct. 15, according to Android Police. The custom Android platform for wearables is in its first iteration , with the first generation of Android Wear devices
consisting of the LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live and Moto 360. The LG G
Watch R is rumored to be the first Android Wear device to come running
2.0.
The major Android Wear 2.0 update is expected to be preceded by several minor updates.
Android Police says the
Android Wear 2.0 release date being Oct. 15 is based on information
that is very credible.
“We're keeping this one short and simple, and the information is, we feel, very credible. Unfortunately, we can't publish the direct evidence for this rumor for a number of reasons, but we're very confident in the reliability of our source here.”
“We're keeping this one short and simple, and the information is, we feel, very credible. Unfortunately, we can't publish the direct evidence for this rumor for a number of reasons, but we're very confident in the reliability of our source here.”
It’s likely that this is coming from an inside source.
A CNET interview with David Singleton,
Director of Engineering for Android Wear, also lends credence to the
likelihood of an Android Wear 2.0 update coming in the next month. When
it comes to time frame for the Android Wear 2.0 update Singleton said,
“There will be several before the end of the year. You'll see one come
out [this] week where we'll be able to improve the navigation experience
and some of the voice action experience.”
The new
Android Wear 2.0 update will include the standard bugfixes, as well as
new features like GPS support and the ability to pair Bluetooth headsets
to the smartwatch. Singleton explained his vision for these features:
If
you're someone who likes to go for a run, it might be convenient to be
able to leave your phone at home. So you can start recording your track
with GPS on the watch. You can throw on some music and have a really
enjoyable run. And when you come back home, everything will be synced up
with the apps running on your phone.
Singleton also said that 3rd party support for watch faces would be added.\
“Another
update that I'm really excited about because I think it will be great
for developers and end users -- a release that will allow third parties
to develop watch faces, and make them available for download at the
Google Play store.”
The addition of local music storage,
Bluetooth headset pairing and GPS support should make Android Wear a
more functional platform overall by giving it some of the same standalone capabilities of the Samsung Gear S. We’ll be looking forward to the rumored Oct. 15 Android Wear 2.0 update.
